She came. She saw. She got her nails done and helped pay the rent. American singer-songwriter Madison Beer, 25, is being praised online for her kind act of paying a struggling nail salon’s rent for a month, an amount that came to S$3,460 (US$2,650).
Hazel Wah, the 21-year-old owner of Edens’ Atelier Co at Aljunied, shared the uplifting story on Instagram on Saturday (Aug 24).
Wah began by sharing some context where she described that she was facing “financial constraints” because the salon, formerly known as Toto Nail Studio, had just moved to a larger studio and she had been left “hanging” by a former business partner who did not honour their initial agreement.
She described losing S$20,000 and having to work 12-hour shifts to cover the amount.
Wah shared in her caption that she was just considering moving back to a smaller studio and starting fresh when “lady luck started shining” on her and Madison Beer reached out to her over direct message, or DM, on Instagram to ask Wah to work on her nails.
The singer wrote that she had a show later that night – she performed at Singapore Expo on Aug 22 – and her nails were “breaking and falling apart”.
Wah told CNA Lifestyle that Beer got to know of her services while scrolling through Instagram looking for a nail studio in Singapore to fix her nails. She shared: “She said she liked my work the most so she chose to get her nails done by me!”
She added that the singer returned to the studio the next day for a new set of nails for a photoshoot, which was when Wah shared about her “financial constraints” regarding her studio rental and other issues.
In her Instagram post, Wah described the singer as “genuinely so kind, so friendly” and called the experience “surreal and amazing”. She also shared that she and Beer “chatted loads”.
The salon owner then posted a screenshot of a bank transfer for S$3,460 for “Nails and Shop Rent” and explained that Beer had generously got her agency to send Wah the money without even telling her. “Also covered your rent for the month. Let me know you got it. Love you n thank you again for everything,” the singer wrote in the DM.
In another screenshot of their conversation, Wah had tried to return the money but Beer refused.
Wah shared with CNA Lifestyle that the singer had transferred the money right after her second appointment, and that she didn’t have any further contact with Beer after that exchange.
Commenters on Wah’s post called the singer “sweet”, “an angel” and “a beautiful person inside (and) out”.
Beer, who was also spotted at Queensway Shopping Centre ahead of her concert, had also given the nail salon a shoutout on her Instagram, which Wah said helped the business.
Wah told CNA Lifestyle that the studio’s Instagram follower count has increased by more than 2,000 people since this incident and their appointment slots are “getting more booked out than usual”.
“(The) team is just really, really thankful for the opportunity that she presented to us and for helping us grow as a business,” Wah said.
